"Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago."
What makes a great business leader? Warren Buffett once said, “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” If you are a student passionate about studying business, planting that tree means undertaking extracurricular projects that combine curiosity, creativity, and implementation. These projects not only allow you to explore the dynamic world of business but also develop critical skills like leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving, while ensuring that you make a tangible impact. Crafting innovative projects and business solutions, can help you build a portfolio that distinguishes you from others for college and beyond in the business world. In this article, I shall explore project ideas that will help you stand out and ignite your journey as an aspiring business major.
1. Start Your Own Small Business
Have you ever had an idea that you knew could make a difference or solve a pressing issue? Starting your own small business is an amazing way for you to transfer that idea into a reality. Irrespective of what you’re passionate about, the first step is to identify a gap in the market. If you have a unique product which has a demand, you can use tools like Shopify to create an online store and Razorpay to simplify payments. You should experiment with marketing techniques, like social media campaigns and pop-up events, to reach your audience. The journey involves managing resources, playing with pricing strategies, and incorporating customer feedback to gain invaluable experience. Moreover, you’ll also develop your creativity, problem-solving skills, and business acumen while building something meaningful. For instance, a classmate of mine started a small custom design stationery business in 12th grade, combining aesthetics with sustainability. She closely tracked customer feedback, which helped her improve the designs, and she used Canva for marketing her product. This experience showcased her creativity and honed her business acumen.
Time Commitment:
- Identifying market gaps and brainstorming ideas: 5-10 hours
- Setting up the business (website, branding, logistics): 15-20 hours
- Marketing campaigns and outreach: 10-15 hours
- Customer engagement and feedback analysis: 10-15 hours
- Total time commitment: 50-70 hours over 2-3 months
2. Participate in Business Case Competitions
Are you a strategic thinker and ready to test your strategic management abilities? Business case competitions give you the opportunity to address real-world problems, develop innovative solutions, and present your ideas to a panel of judges. Participating in such competitions teach you critical thinking, teamwork, and presentation skills, which are essential for future business leaders. Whether you join established competitions that are held at IITs, IIMs and colleges in Delhi University, or organize one at your school, you’ll gain practical experience in creating business proposals. In addition, collaborating with fellow peers also helps you enhance your communication and leadership abilities. For example, a friend from school competed in a sustainability-themed case study competition held at school, where they pitched about sustainable fashion. This sharpened their problem-solving skills and inspired them to pursue a sustainable business idea.
Time Commitment:
- Researching competition themes and registering: 5-8 hours
- Preparing case solutions and presentations: 10-15 hours
- Participating and refining feedback: 5-7 hours
- Total time commitment: 20-30 hours over a few weeks

Through nonprofit and social initiatives you will learn how to manage resources, raise funds, and run impactful projects. You should also consider collaborating with local nonprofits, NGOs and community members to increase the magnitude of your initiative and create meaningful change. Such projects will also help you develop leadership skills and demonstrate your commitment to making a difference in the society. My team, for example, undertook a nonprofit initiative to teach financial literacy to underprivileged kids from a government school. The smiles of the participants were worth the effort!
Time Commitment:
- Defining the mission and goals: 5-10 hours
- Planning initiatives and fundraising strategies: 15-20 hours

You can select books like "The Lean Startup" or "Blue Ocean Strategy" or anything from the field and lead discussions that connect theory to real-world applications. Furthermore, you can facilitate engaging debates and organize various activities that will help everyone involved sharpen their critical thinking and interpersonal skills. You could consider inviting guest speakers or hosting themed sessions to make your club even more impactful. The Business Club in my school, for example, held a debate on Amazon’s entrance in the grocery market with Amazon Fresh, which taught us the nuances of adapting and remaining competitive and made the discussions engaging.
Time Commitment:
- Selecting books and planning the schedule: 3-5 hours
- Preparing discussion points and facilitating meetings: 8-10 hours

While interning or job shadowing you would observe professionals in action, learn about industry-specific challenges, and gain insights into potential career paths. During your journey, document or journal your experiences to reflect on your learning and showcase your growth. For example, I interned with a national logistics and supply chain company to assess if they should open a new production plant to increase the production of their cargo containers. After interacting with senior management, labour and conducting a customer survey, I created a detailed report and recommended a few strategies to make the opening of the new production plant financially and logistically viable, which could save their costs by 15-20% over the upcoming 5 years.

By designing surveys and analyzing responses, you'll gain insights into market dynamics and preferences. Tools like Google Forms and Tableau can help you collect and visualize data. Presenting your findings in a report or presentation will enhance your analytical and communication skills. For instance, my project on students' snack preferences at school led to launching a healthier snack kiosk, which became a huge success and demonstrated the power of actionable data.

- Designing research questions and tools: 5-8 hours
- Collecting and analyzing data: 15-20 hours
- Presenting findings through a report or visuals: 10-12 hours

Are you passionate about business and have a knack for content creation? Then starting a YouTube channel or podcast about business topics would allow you to share your knowledge and connect with an audience. In your videos or podcasts analyze successful business models, interview entrepreneurs, or explore market insights. You must produce high-quality content to build your personal brand and develop skills like content creation, editing, and audience engagement. As a part of digital transformation, you can design websites, set up inventory management systems, or create social media strategies to modernize their business processes. Such projects not only would help businesses thrive and adapt to modern trends but also would give you hands-on experience with real-world challenges. You could partner with mentors and local businesses can add value and credibility to the event.
